Bosque del Oso State Wildlife Area in Las Animas County between Weston and Stonewall, Colorado
Bosque del Oso State Wildlife Area

From Trinidad go 18 miles west on Highway 12 to property. There is an entrance on the east side of Weston and another several miles further west at the old entrance to the Golden Eagle Mine.

  • ACRES: 33,000+
  • FISHING: Coldwater streams
  • HUNTING: Extremely limited by Colorado Division of Wildlife
  • FACILITIES: Rest rooms, camping and parking areas

Bosque del Oso was previously owned by Basin Resources, a wholly owned subsidiary of Montana Power Corp., who retained the mineral rights after selling the surface rights to the Colorado Division of Wildlife. I say this because there are rumored to be several hundred coalbed methane wells on the property. However, the elk seem to have gotten used to the disturbance and have finally come back to the Bosque. This is a draw area and requires several preference points just to be drawn. I have no idea of what the present success ratio is but I have heard several stories of trophy elk being harvested in there over the last few years.
