From I-25 exit 34 (at Aguilar) take Cty. Rd. 60 east for 10 miles, then north on Cty. Rd. 75 for 2 miles. Then go east on Cty. Rd. 64 for 2 miles, then north on Cty. Rd. 79 6 miles to the parking lot.

Bosque del Oso

From Trinidad go 21 miles west to the east edge of Weston. Turn left and follow the signs.
This is the large property that the CDOW bought with the help of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The property is incredible, however, "Bear Woods" is a very apt name.
ACRES: 30,000+/-
OPEN: April 1 to November 30. This is mostly for elk wintering range so things may be a little different.
WILDLIFE: Deer, elk, black bear, mountain lion, small game, wild turkey
FISHING: Cold water stream
RESTRICTIONS:

  • Campfires prohibited except in designated areas and in fire containment structures provided by the DOW
  • Discharging firearms or bows prohibited except while hunting
  • Camping prohibited outside designated areas, except by hunters during established hunting seasons
  • Parking allowed only in designated areas
  • Unattended food and/or garbage is prohibited, unless it is stored in a bear-resistant manner or container
  • Commercial use of this property without prior approval is prohibited
  • Fishing allowed from the beginning of Memorial Day Weekend to the end of Labor Day Weekend
  • Fishing is restricted to flies and lures only, catch and release
  • Property is closed to all public use Dec. 1 to Mar. 30 each year, except for properly licensed big game hunters
  • All deer, elk, black bear and turkey licenses are limited. See CDOW regulations for application information
  • Any hay or straw brought onto the property must be certified as "noxious weed free"

From Raton, NM, go 7 miles east on NM Highway 72 & 256, north up Sugarite Canyon 12 miles to Lake Dorothey SWA, then 2 miles northwest on unmarked trail to top of Fisher's Peak Mesa.

WILDLIFE: Elk, deer, bear, mountain lion, small game, turkey
ACCESS: Restricted to foot or horseback. Camping prohibited within 100 ft. of streams.

Spanish Peaks

From Aguilar take Apishapa Road west following signs to property of from Trinidad, go west on State Hwy 12 8 miles to Cokedale, turn north on Bon Carbo road, follow the signs, or go 13 miles west of Trinidad on State Hwy 12 just past Segundo to Sarcillo Canyon Road, turn north and follow the signs.
ACRES: 6,450
WILDLIFE: Deer, elk, rabbit, squirrel, turkey
ACCESS: Prohibited except from designated parking areas. No parking, camping or fires, except in designated areas.
FACILITIES: Rest rooms, drinking water

This State Wildlife Area is actually composed of two pieces. The Apishapa Road and the Sarcillo Canyon Road take you to the western piece, unless you go north on the Sarcillo Canyon Road about 9 miles and turn east on Cty. Rd. 30.1 (La Garita) and follow the signs. The Boncarbo Road (coming north out of Cokedale) takes some twists and turns but eventually meets up with Cty. Rd. 30.1 at an intersection 4 miles south of the eastern SWA entrance. Just follow the signs.
